raveling DJs, listen up. After well known Drum & Bass DJ Grooverider had been arrested at Dubai (UAE) airport back in November 2007 for the possession of 2.16g of Cannabis (and some rumors also mentioned some porn .. big woop), he has now been sentenced to FOUR years in jail.
Dubai has been growing rapidly as a clubbing city, among other things, inviting many international DJs, from true underground to very well known.
From what I understand, four years is the mandatory sentence if you violate the United Arab Emirates zero tolerance laws. Many travelers are oblivious to these laws and get themselves into trouble, especially since some painkillers and cold medication (even if available over the counter in other countries) are also included.
How about the guy who was jailed because they found 3 poppy seeds on him? Those three seeds were left over from a roll he had eaten at Heathrow airport. Read about him and also find out more about Keith Brown, who was arrested and sentenced to 4 years in jail after 0.003g of cannabis - which weighs less than a grain of sugar - was found stuck to his shoe.
So, everyone.. please educate yourself about the reigning laws of the countries you are traveling to, no matter how ridiculous they may seem to you. I know, I will double check my luggage and clothing even more than before.
This right here is House before it was called House. 1985 - MCA Records, Colonel Abrams was 'Trapped' and all over the Radio singing how he's confused. Anything but, I would say. And yes, if the gig's the bomb, I pull this song out every once in a while. Sweetness... btw. the Colonel never stopped being active in House Music. I have quite a few 12"s in my collection.
More info as always on discogs.com. Check out the flipside. Two mixes by Timmy Regisford (Shelter, NYC).
h yeah. If you are ever in a bad mood and just can't get out of it, watch this video and things will get better. Frankie Knuckles' "Whistle Song" was released on Virgin Records in 1991 and swept the nation (the US that is). Soon after, this gem - written by Eric Kupper - could be heard in every club all over the world and is still guaranteed to put wide smiles on peoples faces. I believe there were new mixes or edits about 2 years ago, but I'm still sticking with the original mixes. Thank you Frankie!
Masters at Work ft. India. In my eyes a magic connection of a great production team and singer with a very distinctive voice. "I can't get no sleep" was originally released on Cutting Records in 1993 but very soon licensed to many labels and then brought back in '95 with several new versions. This is one of those tunes that makes me wanna go out at night.
More info on the song can be found on discogs.com .
